Likes Don’t Pay the Bills: Why Social Media Metrics Don’t Tell the Whole Story
A post gets 10,000 views and hundreds of likes. Another gets four likes but generates two new business leads.
Which one performed better?
The answer depends on what you’re trying to achieve.
At Flavur Creative, we believe social media metrics matter. They help us understand what’s working, what isn’t, and how audiences interact with content. But when likes, comments, and views become the only measure of success, you risk missing the bigger picture.
Because engagement is a metric. Business growth is the goal.
4 Likes. 2 Leads.
We recently shared a project we completed for a client on our own social media. The post received three or four likes.
By traditional social media standards, you might call that a flop.
But that same post generated two leads from potential clients interested in having something similar done for their businesses.
If we judged that post solely by its engagement, we'd overlook the fact that it created genuine business opportunities.
The goal wasn't to collect likes. It was to showcase our capabilities and attract potential clients. And it did exactly that.
From an $800 Record to $1,800 Sales Days
We've seen a similar lesson through our work with The Salvation Army.
We've been posting thrift store content designed to showcase products and encourage people to visit. Despite relatively low engagement compared to the account's following, the results have been encouraging.
Within three weeks of posting, the store broke its previous record sales day of $800, bringing in $1,800.
Since then, it's reached that $1,800 mark multiple times per week.
Social media isn't necessarily the only factor behind those results, but it highlights an important point: content can influence buying decisions without generating hundreds of likes.
Someone might see a post, visit the store, and make a purchase without ever commenting or interacting with the content.
That sale still matters.
Awareness Gets Attention. Promotion Drives Action.
At Flavur, we don't believe in creating only trending, viral content or promotional posts. An effective strategy needs both.
1. Get eyes on the page.
Funny reels, trending content, and relatable posts introduce your brand to new audiences. They build awareness and give people a reason to remember you.
Not every post needs to generate a sale. Sometimes, its job is simply to get people through the door.
2. Give people a reason to buy.
Promotional content showcases your products, services, and value. It encourages people to visit, book, inquire, or make a purchase.
These posts might not generate the same engagement as a trending reel, but they can still deliver meaningful business results.
3. Bring the two together.
Awareness without promotion can leave you with an audience that never becomes a customer. Promotion without awareness can leave you selling to the same small audience repeatedly.
The real opportunity is combining the two to move people from discovering your brand to doing business with you.
Measure What Actually Matters
Likes, comments, views, reach, leads, and sales all tell us something different. The key is measuring each post against its purpose.
A viral video might introduce thousands of people to your business. A quiet promotional post might generate three qualified leads. Both can be valuable, just in different ways.
At Flavur Creative, we don't just jump on trends and hope something sticks. We bring strategy to the table, balancing brand awareness with content designed to drive action.
Because going viral is great. Building an audience is valuable. But turning that attention into business growth is where the real opportunity lies.
Likes are nice. Leads are better. Revenue keeps your business moving forward.
